New Zealand Medal, undated reverse (S D Calvert, Wairoa Rifle Vol.). Named in engraved large capital letters. Longley records 27 NCO and men, including Calvert, of the unit received undated medals. Calvert is mentioned in James Cowan, 'The New Zealand Wars', vol. I, reprint 1983, page 260, when he and his father defended their family homestead. He died of wounds on 24 July 1863 aged 16 years.
