Austral Island Paddle. The paddle blade of leaf shaped form with a long cylindrical shaft. Intricately carved with low relief and an elaborate design of interlocking geometric patterns. Carving to the top of the handle reveals abstracted human figures with protruding faces. This form of Ra'ivavaean paddle is thought to be symbolic rather than utilitarian; these objects are imbued with tribal authority, prestige, and rank of the owner. Old collection label attached. Some losses to sides. Dry early patina. Length 82.1 cm. Width 17 cm

  • Patination / Patina - In broad terms, patination refers to the exterior surface appearance of the timber, the effect of fading caused by exposure to sunlight and air over the course of a century or more, changing the piece to a soft, mellow colour.

As patina is very difficult to replicate, it is one of the most important guides to determining the age of furniture.

Patina is also the term applied to the bloom or film found on old bronzes due to oxidisation.
