A very rare Worcester porcelain claret-ground and gilt shaped circular plate, from the Hope Edwardes service, painted in the London atelier of James Giles with a radish and flowers and fruit. English circa 1770. Provenance: Sir Henry Hope-Edwardes, Wootton Hall, Derbyshire. Litchfield's, The Porcelain Galleries, London. Acquired Albert Amor Ltd London 14/02/1995 (8000 pounds). - Atelier - Atelier (French for "workshop"), in English usuage describes the workshop of an artist in the fine or decorative arts, where the artist and a number of assistants, students and apprentices worked together producing pieces that went out in the artists name. This was the standard practice for European artists from the Middle Ages to the 18th or 19th century
- Circa - A Latin term meaning 'about', often used in the antique trade to give an approximate date for the piece, usually considered to be five years on either side of the circa year. Thus, circa 1900 means the piece was made about 1900, probably between 1895 and 1905. The expression is sometimes abbreviated to c.1900.
