Australia v England - Fourth Test at Brisbane, February 1933 - The 'Bodyline' Crisis, A fill-sized Sykes 'Don Bradman World Record' bat signed on the reverse by 17 members of the English Touring squad and the 12 Australians in Brisbane for the match. With further annotations at the foot including 'England won by 6 wickets 3 runs. This match gave England 'The Ashes'. The Australian team, led by Woodfull, included Richardson, Bradman, McCabe, O'Reilly and Ironmonger made 340 and 175 in their 2 innings. The English team, led by Jardine, included Sutcliffe, Leyland, Larwood, Allen and Hammond made 356 and 4 for 162 in theirs. Interestingly, considering the controversy already raging around the tactics of the English bowlers, the bat has also been signed (at upper left ownership position) by members of the Cricket Board of Control and other cricketers who were present at the match. These included P.F. Warner and R.C.N. Palairet, joint managers of the English team, Kippax and Macartney, and several others. England won the five match series, 4-1. The controversy continues to this day. Many books have been published on the subject. In our opinion, the most comprehensive and well-researched one has been David Frith's ' Bodyline Autopsy - The full story of the most sensational Test cricket series: Australia v England 1932-33' [2003]. If you only read one book on the subject, it should be this one.
