An extensive '2060' stainless steel flatware service designed by Carl Aubock for Amboss, Austria, circa 1957 comprising 12 dinner knives, 7 dinner knives, 12 butter knives, 2 serving forks, 12 main forks, 12 entree forks, 1 large serving spoon, 8 parfait spoons, 12 sporks, 12 table spoons, 8 desert spoons, 1 demi tasse spoon, 1 pair salad servers all signed: Amboss. Other Notes: this service was awarded the gold medal at the Brussels world exhibition in 1958 and the Austrian good design Award.   • Flatware - An alternative name for items of cutlery, principally knives, forks and spoons, now generally used to describe sets of these implements. Nowadays it is mostly used when describing cutlery made of silver and silver plate.

    It is less frequently used to describe all "flat' items of tableware, so that as well as cutlery the definition includes plates.
  • Circa - A Latin term meaning 'about', often used in the antique trade to give an approximate date for the piece, usually considered to be five years on either side of the circa year. Thus, circa 1900 means the piece was made about 1900, probably between 1895 and 1905. The expression is sometimes abbreviated to c.1900.
