Tasmanian photographs by Samuel Clifford, an old-time album, circa 1875, titled 'Tasmanian Scences' on the front cover and with 'S. Clifford, Photographer, Hobart Town' in manuscript on the blank front endpaper. The album contains 24 albumen paper prints, each approx. 10.5 x 18 cm, laid down two per page and all attractively annotated below the images., Several variants of Samuel Clifford's commercially produced Tasmanian Scenes photograph albums are recorded in Australian collections (five in Tasmanian collections and one in the State Library of New South Wales). • Circa - A Latin term meaning 'about', often used in the antique trade to give an approximate date for the piece, usually considered to be five years on either side of the circa year. Thus, circa 1900 means the piece was made about 1900, probably between 1895 and 1905. The expression is sometimes abbreviated to c.1900.
