A pair of fine George II walnut and upholstered side chairs in the French manner, mid 18th century, each with an upholstered arched high back and seat raised on four cabriole supports with scrolling feet, the knees and spandrels of the front supports carved with acanthus foliage, covered in yellow silk damask, 101 cm high, 61 cm wide, 63 cm deep. provenance: Martin Allen Antiques, 2003

It is a common element in classical Greek and Roman design, and is often seen in Corinthian and Composite order columns and used as a decorative element in English, European and Australian furniture, particularly on the curve of a leg, and as decoration for a corbel.
