CHINESE SCHOOL (circa 1850), A Chinese scholar in his study, oil on canvas on board, 45 x 34.5 cm, Note: Several versions exist of Chinese export paintings of the 'Scholar in his Study', however the prominent display of a crucifix is unusual, and this painting was likely commissioned by a European missionary in Macau or Canton, a rare visual link to early Christianity in China.

  • Circa - A Latin term meaning 'about', often used in the antique trade to give an approximate date for the piece, usually considered to be five years on either side of the circa year. Thus, circa 1900 means the piece was made about 1900, probably between 1895 and 1905. The expression is sometimes abbreviated to c.1900.
