An italian word for a chest or coffer. In the Renaisance period the designs were very ornate and richly carved, and may have had applied gesso or painted decoration. They were made as marriage chests and were the contribution of the bride's parents to the wedding. The cassone available on the market in Australia are of a later period, and do not carry the elaborate decoration of the originals.
