A scrimshaw powder horn engraved with a tallship and kangaroo after George Stubbs' 'The Kongouro of New Holland'. Stubbs was an English painter best known for his paintings of horses. His painting of 'The Kongouro from New Holland' was the first painting of a kangaroo by a European (note his original drawing was not done from a live subject). The painting was commissioned by naturalist Sir Joseph Banks, who had accompanied Captain James Cook to Australia aboard the Endeavour, 18th century, 34 cm long
