Battle-Scarred Wahgi Valley War Shield

War shield, Wahgi Valley area, Western Highlands Province, this large and well used older shield has many battle scars and arrow holes. It is made from a dense hardwood. Trees of this size were long ago used by people who had to go further & further to trade to get decent quality and size wood for their shields. Provenance: Purchased from a mount Hagen man named Yap Kupigal in 1986 seen in the field photo he is the man on the left / Todd Barlin collection. 164 x 60 cm
