An antique Continental elm cassone, 16th to 17th century, possibly Spanish, with antique key, the flat topped cassone with wrought iron strapping and original hinges, with decorative inked roundels under the lid depicting double headed eagles, with lions and dragons, the front with an elaborate scene of facing eastern and western armies on horseback, a central seated oriental figure, in ink on a textured ground.
