A Continental silver cigarette box, probably German, late 19th century the hinged lid repousse decorated with a central cartouche from which radiate rays of light, with overlaid scrolls and foliage, opening to reveal a cedar lined interior, the lid design extending to the sides of the box, on a black morocco leather inset base, marks worn, stamped ' CM' 160 gms, 5 cm high, 11.5 cm long, 9 cm deep.   • Embossed / Repousse - Embossing, also known as repousse, is the technique of decorating metal with raised designs, by pressing or beating out the design from the reverse side of the object.It is the opposite of chasing, where the decoration is applied from the front. An embossed or repoussed object may have chasing applied to finish off the design.
