A fine Satsuma vase, Meiji period, later 19th century; with maker's mark for possibly Gyokuzan, the well decorated bottle vase with figural narratives to shaped reserves on a brocade decorated ground between patterned borders, the neck having floral designs of morning glory trailing through lattice; with mon and cartouche in iron red to base.     In ceramics the term defines the central area of a vase or similar with a decorative border in one of the shapes above, into which a decorative scene or figures have been painted.
