Further unpublished manuscripts of various narrative accounts, written by private John P Ward who served in 31 engagements of battle in the New Zealand Wars. Amongst the following papers is an early typewritten draft of the battle of the double Crossing on the Napier-Taupo road in the campaign of 1870 including a good description of the New Zealand cross recipient Benjamin Biddle: ward received a New Zealand war medal and is variously mentioned in several books, including Scott's the Parihaka story, Lambert's story of old Wairoa and the East Coast NZ, Hocken's Bibliography of New Zealand Literature and Bagnell and Richard Stowers Forest Rangers
