An impressive antique Continental faience jardiniere, 19th century, probably Italian, the lobed oval form jardiniere with fantastic applied griffin handles, raised on a waisted pedestal to a quatrefoil base, decorated in typical ochre, yellow, green and blue translucent colours and depicting classical figures in a landscape setting, an additional landscape to the reverse; unmarked. Height 39.5 cm. Width 53 cm. Depth 17 cm

  • Faience / Maolica - Originating in ancient Egypt, faience is the name given to tin-enamelled porcelain or earthenware, deriving its name from Faenza in Northern Italy. Also known as maiolica because at one time the wares passed through Majorca. In England, faience / maoilca underwent a revival in the late 19th century by the art potteries set up about that time.

    Majolica was the name given to a specific product evolved by Minton in 1851 and introduced at the Great Exhibition. The pottery was coloured with a clear glaze containing metallic oxides.
  • Griffin / Griffon / Gryphon - A griffin, also known as a griffon or gryphon, is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle.   • Quatrefoil - A stylised four-circle design, itself contained within a larger circle, with Gothic origins and often seen as window designs in ecclesiastical architecture. The use of the motif was popular in Gothic Revival furniture of the 19th century.
