World War I trench Art crucifix and candlesticks marked 'Ypres' and 'The Menin Gate Memorial Ypres'. Heights 15 cm & 21.5 cm. Provenance: These items were made in France in the Immediate period after the signing of the Armistice by Australian soldiers, as symbols of peace for the future. Their production based on the words from the book of the Prophet Isaiah '..They Shall Beat Their Swords Into Ploughshares and Their Spears Into Pruning Hooks; Nation Shall Not Lift Up Sword Against Nation, Neither Shall They Learn War Anymore.' the Soldiers Gave the Finished Articles to An Anglican Padre/Chaplain, Who Used Them in His Army Chaplaincy Until Demobilisation. Returning to Australia He Kept Them Until World War II, When They Were Given to An English Army Chaplain in India, and Used There For Field Communication Services. a Former Member of the Indian Army, Later to Be Ordained in Australia, Brought Them to Australia, and Passed Them on the Present Owner in 1969
