9ct yellow gold Mother of pearl buckle brooch c.1890. Length 63 mm. verso rose gold fittings stamped 9ct. Note: a similar mother of pearl carving is illustrated on page 32, Gold and Silversmithing in Western Australia by Dr. Dorothy Erickson the buckle illustrated on p.32 was made between 1870-80 for William Hall, pastoralist, pearler and explorer of Cossack. This is in the collection of the W.A. Museum

  • Mother-Of-Pearl - Mother-of-pearl, technical name "nacre", is the inner layer of a sea shell. The iridescent colours and strength of this material were widely used in the nineteenth century as an inlay in jewellery, furniture, (especially papier mache furniture) and musical instruments.

    In the early 1900s it was used to make pearl buttons. Mother-of-pearl is a soft material that is easily cut or engraved.

    Nowadays it is a by-product of the oyster, freshwater pearl mussel and abalone industries.
  • Verso - Verso is the "back" side of a sheet of paper, art work, coin or medal. The front side is "recto".
