9ct yellow gold Mother of pearl pendant and chain, circa 1910 the mother of pearl is carved with a pear and leaf design which is set upon an engraved gold pendant with scalloped edges. Stamped 9ct the chain has a barrel clasp and is stamped 9ct. Note: a similar mother of pearl carving is illustrated on page 57, Gold and Silversmithing in Western Australia by Dr. Dorothy Erickson the piece illustrated on p.57 is by Thomas Ellies, gold dealer and jeweller in Broome in the late 19th century and early 20th century

  • Mother-Of-Pearl - Mother-of-pearl, technical name "nacre", is the inner layer of a sea shell. The iridescent colours and strength of this material were widely used in the nineteenth century as an inlay in jewellery, furniture, (especially papier mache furniture) and musical instruments.

    In the early 1900s it was used to make pearl buttons. Mother-of-pearl is a soft material that is easily cut or engraved.

    Nowadays it is a by-product of the oyster, freshwater pearl mussel and abalone industries.
