Lord Harris' visiting card case: Mother-of-pearl and hand-painted visiting card case (78 x 102 x 9 mm), decorated with cricket scene on one side, and portrait of Lord Harris on the other side, with initials 'Hon Grch' (Harris' initials). Beautiful cricket item, and almost certainly presented to Harris on his assumption of the captaincy in 1878 at the age of 27. [Lord Harris was the second-ever Captain of the English cricket team, leading England against Australia in 1878-79, 1880 & 1884]

  • Mother-Of-Pearl - Mother-of-pearl, technical name "nacre", is the inner layer of a sea shell. The iridescent colours and strength of this material were widely used in the nineteenth century as an inlay in jewellery, furniture, (especially papier mache furniture) and musical instruments.

    In the early 1900s it was used to make pearl buttons. Mother-of-pearl is a soft material that is easily cut or engraved.

    Nowadays it is a by-product of the oyster, freshwater pearl mussel and abalone industries.
