William Ricketts (1898-1993). An important large terracotta clay wall sculpture featuring sixteen individual indigenous heads, standing a large 90 cm tall by 120 cm in width. This alongside Lot.14 (in this auction) is considered to be one of the largest privately owned works known outside the Artists Sanctuary in the Dandenongs, Victoria. With the Sanctuary currently closed due to storms and damage these two works could possibly be some of the largest and rarest to be held in both private and public hands. - Terracotta - Terracotta is lightly fired earthenware, red or reddish-brown in colour, used in ancient times. Fired at higher temperatures terracotta was used in the nineteenth century for decorative vases and similar objects, but rarely for utilitarian goods. Other uses for terracotta include roofing tiles, garden pots and ornaments. Glazed terracotta is known as faience.
