A Burmese silver betel nut box, circa 1900, the fine cylindrical lidded box, richly embossed and engraved in the traditional manner with a continuous frieze of scrolls and arabesques framing medallions depicting Burmese mythical creatures, the fitted lid similarly decorated with the Burmese Chinthe lion in the centre and engraved to the underside, unmarked. Weight 121g height 6.5 cm, diameter: 8.5 cm

- Embossed / Repousse - Embossing, also known as repousse, is the technique of decorating metal with raised designs, by pressing or beating out the design from the reverse side of the object.It is the opposite of chasing, where the decoration is applied from the front. An embossed or repoussed object may have chasing applied to finish off the design.
- Frieze - An architectural term denoting the flat, shaped or convex horizontal surface of furniture, between the architrave and the cornice, usually found on a cabinet or bookcase, or on desks and tables where it may include drawers, the area between the top and the legs. In ceramics, the term refers to the banding, of usually a repeating pattern, on the rims of plates and vases.
