A bible together with a carved box, the bible 16th century, the box 19th century, the rectangular pine box richly carved with a scene of birds amongst foliage to the lid, opening to reveal a fitted red and gilt lacquered interior, above a single drawer below with a sectioned interior, the bible with brown leather binding (rebound), published by Christopher Baker, London, 1597. Inscribed Westmore Stephens/Wolverton/ Toorak/1899 to inside cover page, the box 16 cm high, 40 cm wide, 29 cm deep. Provenance: Property of Westmore Godsen Stephens (1840-1914), of the historic 'Wolverton' residence on Malvern Rd, Toorak. An inaugural member of the Armadale Baptist church who donated the land at Kooyong Rd, Armadale for the Armadale Baptist church
