Edward Wilkinson (British fl. 1880-91) the sail and steam vessel 'Britannia', gouache on paper signed (lower left) 28.5 x 55.5 cm Britannia was built in the 1870s by Short Bros. of Sunderland for Taylor and Sanderson. She was one of a fleet of vessels known as 'Black Sea Traders'. Their trade was coal from the North East coast to Italy, thence in ballast through the Bosporus to Black Sea Ports. Here they loaded grain for their return to British Ports. Engines were triple expansion steam giving a speed of 9 knots on 14 tons of coal per day.
