A Japanese Satsuma earthenware bowl from the Kinkozan factory, the interior with octofoil panel painted in gilt and enamel with ten daimyo and samurai assembled in a group around an unfurled scroll on the ground. The exterior with two panels, one an audience scene, the other women and children in an interior. The borders and body richly detailed with gilt on cobalt blue. Horizontal five-character mark in gilt Kinkozan tsukuru zo and impressed mark Kinkozan tsukuru under the base. Provenance: Auckland estate collection. Diameter 24.5 cm

  • Earthenware - A basic ceramic material that is fired at a low temperature. Earthenware is the basis of almost all ancient, medieval, Middle Eastern and European painted ceramics. After firing, the colour is the colour of the clay when it is dug from the ground: buff, brown and red. It is not waterproof until glazed. Creamware is a type of earthenware covered with a transparent lead glaze. Majolica, faience and delft are also earthenware covered in an opaque white tin glaze.
