'Journal of a voyage to New South Wales 1787-8' by John White Esq, 'With sixty-five plates of non-descript animals, birds, lizards, serpents, curious cones of trees and other natural reproductions', with an engraved title page and 65 coloured-plates, first edition, printed for J Debrett, Piccadilly in 1790. Other Notes: John white Esq. (1757 or 1758-1832) was chief surgeon of the first Fleet, and was particularly successful in managing both the difficult conditions on the voyage out and the early years of the settlement. He was also a keen amateur naturalist. His journal provides valuable insights into the role and duties of an eighteenth century physician, health problems experienced by the first Fleet population and relationships with Aboriginal people.
