A beautifully carved Korwar headrest from Cenderawasih Bay, Western Papua, formerly known as Irian Jaya. The concave rectangular top is supported by a finely carved symmetrical design comprising arabesques and two korwar figures in a sphinx pose representing ancestral spirits, resting on a platform with incised decoration.   • Incised - A record of a name, date or inscription, or a decoration scratched into a surface, usually of a glass or ceramic item with a blunt instrument to make a coarse indentation.
