A palm wood mask, Kamano people, Eastern Highlands, Papua New Guinea, this is a most unusual mask & possibly part of the traditional 'Sorcery trap', made of flexible plants bent to form, then adorned with magic stones & carved fernwood forms like this one. These traps prevented evil spells entering precinct, particularly at ritual times, 35 x 18 cm
