Antique Iranian Kashan Palace size carpet all wool pile in natural dyes on a cotton foundation using the Persian (Senha) knot. The overall classic floral design is commensurate with the age and size of the carpet. The seven principal colours have oxidized over the decades to give a subtle tonal range. The main field of the carpet features a central red eight pointed star within a larger white star medallion. The anchor pendants carry palmette, calyx and lily motifs generating bold floral sprays, including tulip, carnation and peony motifs. The design rests on an abrashed indigo field carrying a rich design of floral sprigs and scrolling vines of buds. These are echoed in the reversed colour scheme of red ground with white spandrels showing sickle (saz) leaf motifs, vine scrolls and spiraling rosette tendrils, florets, lilies and palmettes. Provenance: According to the vendor, the carpet was made in Kashan, Iran between the late 19th and early 20th century. It was reportedly made to an order for Hatfield house, Hertfordshire UK, the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth 1. It was brought to Australia to a Queensland homestead. When the grazing property was broken up it was acquired by the present vendor. Dimensions: 610 x 390 cm
