A rare and large 19th century New Zealand historical silver Maori themed brooch by Adolph Kohn, cast, hand worked and punched detail of Maori warrior before a whare flanked by pataka and cabbage tree, a distant view of a shield volcano (Rangitoto island), all framed by two pairs of elongated fern leaves. Stamped maker's marks to reverse and engraved scripted initials SCC and date 1888. Width 5.8 cm. In old fitted circular box. Note: Adolph Kohn (1856-1910) born in Prussia arrived in New Zealand aged 18 years. Sometime after 1881 Adolph moved to Auckland to manage his brother Heinrich's Queen St. business, in about 1899 the business became known directly by the name Adolph Kohn. He and his business were held in high esteem.
