Carved stone head. with some remnant of red, green & white pigment in the engraved lines, high Grade Ancestor figure from Malekula or a nearby island in Vanuatu, the stone is very hard, mostly ancestor figures are carved in fern stem, wood or coral. Late 19th or early 20th century. Previously owned by Lord McAlpine of West Green. Also owned by him & in the same collection were two standing drums from Ambryn Island, Vanuatu, purchased by the West Australian Museum in 1991 & displayed in the exhibition of Extraordinary Stories from the British Museum 25/10/11 - 5/2/12. Collection Dr John Raven, Perth.
