A 19th century tangiwai pounamu pekapeka, traditionally represented with two back-to-back figures, an hour-glass suspension hole to the top, recessed cut ring eyes. Width 5 cm. Provenance: Sold at auction c.1991 Sloane's Wellington lot 78 Miet Collection Private Estate Collection. Note: it has been suggested that the form represents the native bat (also called pekapeka). However, it is also possible that the representation is of two intertwined bird forms.
