Siege of Paris: bronze medal by Chaplain (74 mm, 187g) obverse: relief of a robed female figure standing with a rifle with cannons and fortifications at her feet and a balloon flying in the background; rev: lists important dates and shows the Champigny Memorial. Also, silvered-bronze memorial medal by Degeorge to members of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts 'Morts pour la defence de la Patrie,' Marianne, holding palm and wreath, stands by fallen warrior, rev figure at the monument to the sculptor Henri Regnault, names to either side.   • Bronze - An alloy of copper and tin, traditionally in the proportions of about 9 parts of copper to 1 part of tin.

    The discovery of bronze in Western Asia in the 4th century enabled people to create metal objects which were superior to those previoulsy possible because of its strength and hardness, and it has been used throughout the world for weapons, coins, tools, statuary and other decorative items.

    It is very fluid in a molten state, and its hardness, strength when set, and non-corrosive properties makes it most suitable for casting sculpture.
  • Obverse - Obverse means the front face of a coin or medal, and the reverse means the back face. The obverse of a coin is commonly called heads, because it often depicts the head of a monarch or famous person.
