A carved hardwood brushpot Bitong, 19th/20th century, the wood probably Huanghuali, naturalistically modelled in the form of a prunus tree trunk, the exterior carved with knots and protrusions with blossoming branches extending up the sides, and pine trees growing from the base and from the mouth rim in high relief. 20.5 cm wide.

    During Ming and early Qing dynasties, most of the best furniture was made from huanghuali wood.

    It is a member of the rosewood family and over time the surface mellows to a yellowish brown tone with the exposure to light.

    In recent years, furniture made from huanghuali wood has increased exponentially in value.
