Charles Darwin, On the origin of species by means of natural selection, or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life, John Murray, London, 1859, octavo, folding lithographed diagram, 32-page publisher's catalogue dated June 1859, bound at the end, original gilt decorated green cloth, first edition, one of 1250 printed. Provenance: Private Collection, New Zealand. Compare with the same edition sold by Peter Arnold Pty Ltd, The Library of Dudley Dickison, together with other properties, 17 September 2007, Melbourne, lot 11. The present example is believed to be the only first edition of the work sold in Australia by public auction since this time.
