A large Neolithic pottery jar with applied loop handles, Gansu-Yangshao Culture, 3,000-1,500 BC, painted with soft thin & thick concentric circles to the body & a shark fin shape on the neck, in red & purple mineral pigment, the bulbous body balanced on a narrow flat base, height 33 cm, diameter 36 cm. Other Notes: made from the ochre coloured loess earth from Northern china, which has a low clay content & doesn't absorb water easily
