A Victorian gateleg table, it is notable for its long side flaps, sometimes reaching almost to the floor, with a very narrow central section, rarely more than 15cm wide. They are popular because they take up little space when the flaps are down. They are usually veneered in a fancy timber such as burr walnut, figured walnut or rosewood. Apparently named after the Duchess of Sutherland, a Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria.
