Michael Hirst was born in 1917, and set up a small furniture factory in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn and was active as designer and manufacturer from 1955-1983 trading as Michael Hirst P/L, Michael Hirst Furniture and/or "H-Line". His furniture was sold through Melbourne retailers such as Andersons and Georges and also through interior decorators. He exhibited his designs at Gallery A, Melbourne. He began designing in collaboration with Clement Meadmore in 1955. Michael Hirst passed away in 2002 and was inducted posthumously into the Design Institute of Australia in 2017
