A low, partitioned stand, used for storage of sheet music, and nowadays also used to hold magazines and papers. Invented in the late 18th century, most canterburies available on today's market date from the Victorian age, frequently in burr walnut veneer and with open fretwork galleries. Early music canterburies are generally of plain design, in the form of a low-sitting magazine rack, in keeping with design principles of the period, whilst the later versions are much more flamboyant, and have an extra tier added, with a shelf on the top section.
