A Victorian cased sterling silver and ivory presentation trowel and gavel by H&T, Birmingham 1885/6, engraved 'Presented to Thomas Stoddard Esq on the occasion of his laying the foundation stone at the Ballarat Mining Exchange Lydiard Street Ballarat, 21st June 1887', the trowel 27 cm, Thomas Stoddart (1828-1905) was born in Scotland and in his 20's emigrated to Australia. Arriving in Melbourne, he initially worked as a carpenter before he tried his luck on the Ballarat gold fields. In 1861 he abandoned the fields and set himself up in the share broking business, where he was known to have floated more gold mining companies than anybody else in Ballarat. It was Stoddart who suggested that the Ballarat Stock Exchange move from Sturt Street to Lydiard Street, and immediately moved his business, Stoddart & Binnie to premises upstairs. In 1884, after a visit to Italy, Stoddart gifted 12 carrara marble classical statues to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens which were unveiled by the Governor of Victoria on Empire Day

  • Victorian Period - The Victorian period of furniture and decorative arts design covers the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901. There was not one dominant style of furniture in the Victorian period. Designers used and modified many historical styles such as Gothic, Tudor, Elizabethan, English Rococo, Neoclassical and others, although use of some styles, such as English Rococo and Gothic tended to dominate the furniture manufacture of the period.

The Victorian period was preceded by the Regency and William IV periods, and followed by the Edwardian period, named for Edward VII (1841 ? 1910) who was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India for the brief period from 1901 until his death in 1910.
  • Carrara Marble - Carrara marble is a type of white or blue-grey marble quarried in the Carrara region of Tuscany, Italy. It is prized for its beauty, durability and the ease with which it can be worked. The marble has been used for thousands of years for sculptures and architectural details, and was particularly popular during the Renaissance period. Some of the most famous sculptures in the world, such as Michelangelo's David, were carved from Carrara marble. It is also widely used in the construction of buildings, floors, and countertops, both indoors and outdoors. This marble is known for its unique veining which gives it a distinctive look, and it's a popular choice for interior design, especially bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Sterling Silver - Sterling silver is a mixture of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of another metal, usually copper. Fine silver is 99.9% pure silver, and is relatively soft and the addition of the very small amount of copper gives the metal enough strength and hardness to be worked into jewellery, decorative and household objects.
