War shield Mendi Valley, Southern Highlands Province, this oval type of shield known as worrumbi was the most important type of shield for fighting in the Mendi Valley area. This shield with an abstract anthropomorphic figure is of the rarest type. An old and well used shield carved from hardwood and has pecked designs for the outline of the figure and then ochre painted decoration. There is a native repair at bottom of this shield. Provenance: Collected by Todd Barlin in Mendi in 1986. 138 x 49 cm
