A mid 19th century Anglo-Indian silver inkstand, twin handled rectangular form with ornate applied cast leaf, flower and scroll border in the French manner, with two crystal cube shaped inkwells and central finial (thread damaged), with presentation inscription, 'FROM Mrs P.F. Isacke TO Major & Mrs Hayne...'. Stamped markers mark ORR for Peter Nicholas Orr, Madras c1851-1860. Weight of silver base only 410 grams. Length 30 cm.

    Finials have a variety of shapes and forms. They may be urn-shaped, baluster shaped round or spiral, but usually taper into an upper point. Many real life shapes may also be used as finials, such as pineapples, berries, pinecones, buds, lotus and acorns. Sometimes animals such as a lion are depicted, or fish and dolphins.
