An attractive view of London as seen from Islington, after a drawing by Canaletto, with St Pauls dominating the skyline and all the city church steeples visible. When Canaletto returned to London in the middle of 1751 after some months in Venice, he was commissioned by Robert Sayer to produce drawings for a series of London views, the church of St Mary le Bow in Cheapside. Engraving. Artist John Bowles 1754, Boyer / J. Boydell - a View of Weftminfter bridge / Vue du Pont de Weftminfter, published in London, dated 1753- a scarce, beautifully engraved view of Westminster bridge and London. The work was originally executed by Boyer. Many key London sites are depicted in the background, including St. James. Numerous sailing and rowing vessels are shown on the river Thames. • Circa - A Latin term meaning 'about', often used in the antique trade to give an approximate date for the piece, usually considered to be five years on either side of the circa year. Thus, circa 1900 means the piece was made about 1900, probably between 1895 and 1905. The expression is sometimes abbreviated to c.1900.
