An Australian Colonial Sporting trophy, inscribed, 'Mayor of Sandhursts Sports, Aug. 6th 1884, Sheffield Handicap won by R. A. Burley, Alf. S. Bailes, mayor' (from the State of Victoria). The trophy is constructed of silver plated metal with, mounted emu egg, with figural athlete runner finial, with ferns, grapes, and vine leaves decoration, mounted on turned ebonised wooden base, total height 42 cm. Note: Alfred Shrapnell Bailes is listed as the Mayor, of Bendigo, Victoria, from 1883 - 1884

Many real life shapes may also be used as finials, such as pineapples, berries, pinecones, buds, lotus and acorns. Sometimes animals such as a lion are depicted, or fish and dolphins.
