A 19th century rare carved Chinese tortoiseshell snuff box made in Canton for export to the west. Deeply carved to the lid and sides with Mandarin courtiers at leisure amongst houses and trees, the base with conforming decoration and shaped for the hip, hinged lid. 8.5 x 6.2 x 2.3 cm one small corner section absent

"Faux tortoiseshell", another case of man initiating nature, is made from old-style plastics such as celluloid and cellulos and is coloured with red, yellow and brown spots to imitate the genuine article. It is commonly used in glasses frames, musical instruments and costume jewellery.
