Pedestal desk. A desk with an enclosed, box-like pedestal on either side of the central kneehole section, usually containing three or more drawers or sometimes a cupboard with shelves. To enable movement through door and passage ways, they are usually made in three sections, with the writing top, containing two or three drawers, fitted separately to the two pedestals which it help to hold it secure. Pedestal desks are wider than kneehole desks and have no cupboard in the middle section where the occupant sits. Roll top desks are frequently pedestal desks with the addition of a superstructure containing pigeonholes and a slatted roll top.
