Pole screen. A firescreen, consisting usually of a square or shield-shaped piece of tapestry or embroidery, attached to an adjustable brass or wooden stem. They were designed to protect the face from the fire. The banner pole may either be on a tripod base standing on the floor or, in the smaller versions, made to stand on a table.
