ceramics - McHugh Pottery
McHugh's Pottery. Established in 1872 by Scotsman John McHugh near Launceston Tasmania, the business was primarily a pipe manufacturing business, as well as secondary lines in domestic and agricultrural wares.
John McHugh died in in 1892 and the business was continued by his his four sons.
So far as collectors are concerned, the McHugh Pottery golden years are the 1930s, when several well known potters were employed, and the output of the period is noted for its drip glazes in yellows, blues and pinks. Some of the wares of this period are dated.
The pottery was acquired by Humes Ltd., pipe manufacturers in the 1950s, and in 1988 Humes was acquired by the Smorgan group. In 1990 Humes changed its name to to S.C.I Steel Ltd.
